Surroundings
To visit: The cultural heritage of Drôme Provençale is very rich. You can visit a range of medieval sites, which bear witness to a turbulent history of fighting between local lords as well as religious wars. Its castles, built on hilltops overlooking the villages are often now in ruin, however some are still in excellent condition. We recommend the castle of Grignan (made famous by Madame de Sévigné), the castle of Suze-la-Rousse (with its University of Wine) and the castle of Aulan (perched on a rocky peak).
Drôme Provençale also lays claim to 3 of the 100 most beautiful villages in France: La Garde Adhémar, Le Poët-Laval and Montbrun-les-Bains.
The Roman bridge of Nyons is well worth the detour, as is the feudal keep of Chamaret and the 15th century arcades of Buis-les-Baronnies.
The Provencal markets will give you the chance to discover local fruit, vegetables and Provencal dishes and to visit charming old villages with their stone houses and coloured shutters...
